A Message From Horizon 2060:A Statewide Transportation Summit will be held August 19 and 20 in Orlando on the future of transportation in Florida. At this event, all interested partners and members of the public will have an opportunity to provide input on draft language for the 2060 Florida Transportation Plan and to help kickoff an update to Florida’s Strategic Highway Safety Plan. To help us plan and prepare accordingly, please click here to RSVP online. Thursday’s event will include roundtable discussions and electronic voting to build consensus on draft goals and objectives to be potentially included within the 2060 Florida Transportation Plan. A preliminary meeting agenda is posted online, and additional materials will be posted as soon as they become available. * Please note. If you are unable to attend the Summit, the draft goals and objectives will be posted online in survey form and available for comment. Wow, this is great news for the state. It’s a good thing the public can have an active participation and learn more about the development of this 50 year plan. The effort may be well into the future but it’s still exciting to know what they’ll come up with and what they’ll have in store for this great state of ours…
I was at one of their early public meetings in Miami and here are 2 observations:
–there didn’t seem to be much thought as to where fuel prices would go in the future. The assumption being that fuel prices would proportionately stay roughly where they are now and thus there will be huge increases in traffic in the next 50 years (as population grows).
–the state has neither room nor money for big new roads and is counting on moving people towards transit to avoid building those roads. I remember saying that the state would new 5 new I-95s (remember they’re developing a 50-year plan) if fuel stayed the same relative price and the facilitator looked at me like I was nuts. In her mind, we couldn’t even afford one more interstate.
I do expect them to support 20 years down the road, pie in the sky high speed rail, without getting ridership for it now by funding more Amtrak service in the state.
I don’t think they’re clueless, I just think there’s a lot of people who assume our present will largely be our future. The final report will be interesting.
FDOT basic funding structure is supported by GAS taxes, and unfortunately as gas prices have gone up, the tax has stayed the same. There must be a new look taken at how future infrastructure projects are funded.
At the session held a few months back at Miami Dade College, it was made abundantly clear to FDOT that Miami-Dade want rail and bike/ped improvements, it was made clear to the people there that FDOT has no idea how to make that happen. It should be FDOT’s top priority to figure out how on earth they will raise the funds to implement the many needed improvements.
