THE MIAMI-DADE MPO IS CALLING FOR IDEAS TO ASSIST IN THE PLANNING OF A BETTER TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM
(MIAMI, December 6, 2009) – The Miami-Dade Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO), the agency responsible for transportation planning in Miami-Dade County, is seeking ideas for transportation studies that can lead to effective solutions to deal with traffic congestion in the County.
Ideas submitted will be considered for inclusion in the Unified Planning Work Program for Transportation (UPWP). Ideas selected by the UPWP committee, representing the various transportation agencies, will be recommended for adoption by the MPO Governing Board. This is an opportunity for citizens to get involved and make a difference by helping to alleviate traffic congestion.

Really?! I think it is nice that they want our input, but aren’t they getting paid to do the thinking for us? Regardless I will be submitting my ideas via the link.
I live in the downtown area and work at the port of miami. It is a 10-15 min drive and Id gladly take the public transportation except that it would take me two buses (or a metromover ride and a bus) and over 35 min to get there (mostly bc of the swap). Its pretty silly really. Why cant we have say a metro mover going into the port. There is no easy way for ppl to move from MIA to the POM either. Metrorail from MIA (WIP) and a connection to the metromover using the old rail line would be amazing and I for one would contribute to one less car in ever becoming busy biscayne boulevard.
Mario – I agree with you 100%. An MIA/Port Connection is key.
In my comments to them, I also said a seamless MIA, the Port, South Beach should be a top priority. The only bus into the Port leaves from the Overtown station during rush hours. That it runs only during rush hours tells me a whole lot of Port users/workers don’t even know about it. Sadly, it has one of the most passenger unfriendly stops ever, despite abutting the “Transit Village”.
But I also added this low-cost transit-oriented development idea: invite the Overtown Farmers Market to move into the Overtown Metrorail station proper or to the courtyard between the station and the Overtown Transit Village (transit’s office building). Talk about stimulating the local economy: their current market is only 2-3 blocks from the station and much of the produce is grown in the fields surrounding the market. They just need the exposure of more customers to thrive. FYI: the produce is organic, truly local, and fresh–sometimes the produce is picked the same hour you pick it. Open Wed & Fri 1-4pm. If they moved to the station, I’m sure they could adjust their hours to allow people to pick up real food on the way home from work.
With the abandonment of plans for the Orange Line, it seems that large-scale expansion of the Metrorail system is highly unlikely, at least for the foreseeable future. The County should focus instead on small expansions of the system within the urban core, especially in areas that can support more high-density development. The most obvious of these would be to extend Metrorail fourteen blocks east, possibly along NW 36 St., to Midtown and to a possible connection with the FEC Corridor.
Two other possibilities: MIC to Marlins Stadium; the Douglas Rd. connector.
