Forgive the poorly written headline but, an elderly man is in critical condition after a Miami driver tried to pass a stopped bus – on the right and over the sidewalk – hitting the waiting pedestrian and then fleeing the scene.

The cult of speed and the lack of traffic law enforcement in Miami is killing our residents. 4 in 10 fatal traffic accidents kill people who are walking or bicycling in Miami-Dade County, making ours one of the most dangerous cities in the country for active transportation users. VIDEO from the bus camera is shocking and clearly shows the man about to board the bus, the bus doors opening, the SUV blindsiding him and then the driver running away.
TransitMiami.com has reported dozens of crashes and collisions with pedestrians and bus shelters in the last year (here’s one last month). This will only stop with better road design, increased law enforcement and aggressive efforts to curb unsafe driving behavior in Miami.
Police and policymakers, what are you waiting for? How many people have to be killed or maimed on city sidewalks before you start prioritizing pedestrian safety?

Perhaps a ride, walk down the most dangerous of these streets to raise awareness. We should be mad as hell about this.
Just one more thing, Kathryn: Harsher penalties. People get away with murder in Miami. They either get a slap on the wrist or they hire a ticket clinic, which for $69 can get anyone off the hook.
How does that happen? I suspect we’d have to ask a judge…
The cult of speed in Miami is unmatched and very shameful. If Miami had more rapid transit option, people wouldn’t be in such a hurry. Traffic can be horrendous. Our culture is becoming increasingly impatient, and what do your elected officials do beside expand i95 and fix that sorry excuse for an interchange at the 826/836?
Another type of road rage, the result of too much traffic, & too many people in a hurry and running late…….can’t we all just slow down? (paraphrasing Rodney King)

I’ve always wondered this, let’s say an uninsured motorist hits you. Who pays to put you in the ground or for your medical bills, loss of income? A relevant question since an older study found that 62% of Miami Dade residents don’t drive with auto insurance (I can only imagine how much higher the percentage is now.)

You have no idea how lawless and ill run Miami-dade is till living here.
A police dept which ignores reckless drivers ,etc and politicians to busy stealing all contribute to this.

I like your post and either you live in miami or you have lived here.
I have been in 3rd world countries when I was in military which are better run than this place and could not fathom a more apathetic police dept when it comes to dangerous drivers.
It is not uncommon to see countless vehicles at night 11pm to 4 am with NO license plates and police do nothing.
