I’d love to see MDT institute this form of inexpensive/no-cost transit oriented development: farmers’ markets at Metrorail stations. They would just have to be at a few stations, a few times a week over the whole system. Stop at a station, buy food, and continue home. In case you’re wondering, right now there are farmers markets close by at the Civic Center (site temporarily closed for renovations), Overtown (harvest season only) and South Miami (year round), but they are just far enough away that I bet most transit users don’t know they are there, which is a shame considering the quality of the food and lower prices.

What a great idea. No, really, this is a GREAT idea. Can you imagine how convenient this would be for both commuters AND farmers/vendors? Both groups could use a break; does anyone from the Mayor’s office read this column?

It would take a multi-departmental approval process and someone making a personal commitment to the success of this project…if but only though.

I’d support this by petition or social networking, as would anyone who rides the train. If they can get fresh veggies on the way home, everybody wins; why not?
