Transitography 41: Freiburg Straßenbahn

The Freiburg Straßenbahn line 4 running in an early October snowfall in southern Germany.

Freiburg, a town of just over 200,000 boasts 4 tram lines and over 21 bus routes, far more than most cities it size…Check out the map of the routes…

Who says small towns can’t have public transit? You certainly can’t if they aren’t first navigable to pedestrians, the original form of personal transportation. Freiburg also boasts an extensive pedestrian zone in the city core and compact urban design that places most public structures in easy reach.

Financing has been secured to construct a Maglev train linking Munich with its’ airport, however the $2.6 Billion project is still facing a great deal of criticism. The proposed train would cut the trek to and from the city and airport down to 10 minutes from the current 40.

Car in the subway

Fidel Castro Relinquished power temporarily…yada yada yada, he’s getting old and senile; what else could we expect?

Here’s a fun video, how would you react if you saw a car come barreling through the subway station? Quite entertaining, however, considering this was done in Germany in a highly monitored subway; I can only assume that this prankster was surely reprimanded severely…

German Water Bridge

I found this picture to be too fascinating to not share. It is a 1 km water bridge in Magdeburg, Germany; it was completed in October 2003. It cost 500 Million Euros to build and links two vital German Industrial shipping Canals over the River Elbe.
