It’s been a little over a year now since a Bike Miami Days event has taken place in downtown. If you enjoy these free community events come out and show your support on Sunday, Nov 14th. Start by inviting your friends and family, help spread the word because if you don’t there’s no telling when the next Bike Miami Days will be.
Downtown Miami will be hosting the next Bike Miami Day on Sunday, October 10, 2010. Preparations are underway to bring back this great event where residents get to re-discover Downtown, Miami in a new and refreshing way by being able to walk, bike and enjoy the city streets.
Streets will be closed from 9am-2pm at the intersection of Biscayne Blvd. and Flagler Street west to SW 1st Ave and from Flagler Street south on SE 1st Ave onto South Miami Avenue to SE 10th Street allowing vehicular traffic to cross only at main intersections. The route is appropriate for people of all ages and skill levels and they be able to choose any part of the route to ride, walk and explore. The Miami Police will be present to keep all participants safe ensuring that traffic is routed appropriately. There will be a variety of activities for everyone to enjoy throughout the day in addition to local restaurants and shops that will be open to public.

An estimated 1500 cyclists attended Bike Miami Days in Coconut Grove this past Sunday. Congratulations to the City of Miami and the Dutch Consulate for putting together another fantastic event. A special thanks to Collin Worth, Bicycle Coordinator for the City of Miami, for making it happen.
We should also thank M.O.S.T (Miami Open Streets Team), Bike Miami Scene, Green Mobility Network, South Florida Bicycle Coalition (SFBC), Emerge Miami and the Coconut Grove Grapevine for promoting Bike Miami Days. This is truly a grassroots event that is picking up steam.
Great work everyone! The word on the livable street is that we will see more Bike Miami Days events in the future. Rumor has it a lot of promises were made. We really like people that keep their word.
This month’s issue of Bicycling Magazine puts Miami as 44th best city in the US for bicycling. Only two years ago we were named one of the worst cities for bicycling. Our city has certainly come a long way, but we need the ongoing leadership of the Mayor of Miami and the City Commission to continue this trajectory. Without City Hall’s support I remain skeptical that Miami will continue to advance in Bicycle Magazine rankings, to say nothing of the effect on our vibrant bicycle culture.
Former Mayor Manny Diaz had a vision for cycling and pursued it, and while current Mayor Regalado has been big on the talk of promoting cycling, he has yet to deliver. I was excited by the Mayor’s pronouncement yesterday about the partnership with the Dutch Consulate for Bike Miami Days. One of the reasons Miami quickly jumped to #44 and is considered “up and coming” is because of Bike Miami Days. However, despite having issued a proclamation supporting cycling, not a single Bike Miami Days event has been held since Mayor Regaldo took office.
I sincerely hope that Mayor Regaldo and the City Commission step up in a big way to make the next Bike Miami Days event bigger and better than any of the other previous BMD events. The Mayor in particular should view this as a great opportunity to take bring the community together and show his support for bicycling in Miami. Observers have noted that the Mayor has dedicated minimal resources to planning or organizing the event, despite the pleas of many former BMD Volunteers and local bike advocates - going so far as to delegate the event to a hired PR consultant.
This administration’s commitment to cycling needs to go beyond proclaiming support and treating this as a public relations issue. I remain unconvinced.

-The event will feature Second Annual Orange Bike Parade-
(Miami, FL April 6, 2010)—City of Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado, the Consul General of the Netherlands Lucita Moenir Alam, and the Dutch community will kick off the first Bike Miami Days of 2010, Sunday, April 25th 2010, from 10:00am – 2:00pm, at Peacock Park, 2820 McFarlane Road, Miami, FL., 33131.
“This is a great activity for the whole family to enjoy,” said Mayor Regalado. “Cycling is a fun and green way to see all the beautiful things our city has to offer.”
The event will mark the Second Annual Orange Bike Parade, hosted by Consul Alam to commemorate the Dutch’s preferred mode of transportation for centuries and also support the City’s effort to make Miami a more bike-friendly city.
Cyclists will have the opportunity to ride freely along a designated route in Coconut Grove. Other activities will include giveaways, skateboard demos, and bike clinics.

The word on the livable street is that Bike Miami Days or something similar will return in April. While nothing is official just yet, a grassroots group is meeting on a weekly basis to try and bring an ‘Open Streets’ event back. Sources close to Transit Miami have told us that Mayor Regalado has given a nod in support of this widely popular event. Before the ride begins we will go over basic bicycle safety information, and make sure everyone’s bike is road ready with the ABC quick check. The ride will meet at 8:30 and we will ride promptly at 9am.
The ride will travel through Brickell, Downtown, Little Havana, and Coconut Grove. 14 miles total.
The Association of Pedestrian & Biking Professionals (APBP) is recognizing Transit Miami friend, Kathryn Reid Moore for her many contributions to Bike Miami Days with the Young Professional of the Year award. She will be the first person to ever receive this award at the 10th International Conference on Walking and Livable Communities, held in New York City on October 7 – 9.
In addition, the Florida Bicycle Association has selected Bike Miami Days and Bike Miami Rides to receive the Event of the Year Award.
Congratulations to Kathryn and to all of those that worked so hard to make Bike Miami Days a success. This recognition promises to be the beginning of something bigger for Miami.
The momentum continues. Bike Miami Days proved, yet again, that the car free event is the real deal. With virtually no media coverage or marketing budget, this grassroots movement attracted an estimated 2000 people on Sunday. The streets were filled with bicyclists, pedestrians, skaters and rollerbladers of all ages and backgrounds.
Sources close to Transit Miami have informed us that Waste Services Inc., the lead sponsor of the event, was so impressed that they are considering sponsoring another Bike Miami Days. We must also thank the Miami DDA and the Florida Bicycle Association for their support. Please let your commissioners know how great this event is. You can find a link to your commissioner above.

Get comfortable with riding in the road – it’s your right!
The Bike Miami Days Team invites you to a free bike ride through MiMo, Little Haiti & the Upper Eastside this Sunday to becoming safer, better, more confident city cyclists. No registration is required and it is completely free.
Officers from the City of Miami Police Department Bicycle Unit, will be on hand to teach you the basics of riding safe in the road so that you can confidently commute and run errands on your bicycle.
The day will start with an “A-B-C Quick Check”(Air, Brakes and Chain). You’ll learn how to fit your bicycle helmet for optimum safety. You will also learn the basic Rules, Rights and Responsibilities of Cyclists and Motorists before heading out for a short ride – just under 2 hours long. The ride will stop for water and bathroom breaks and learning opportunities as you’ll explore Miami’s Historic Upper Eastside neighborhoods. At the end of the ride, you’re invited to join the City of Miami Bicycle Coordinator, Collin Worth, and other volunteers for lunch. Destination to be determined.
