Bicycle Month is officially underway in Miami, and now according to Governor Charlie Crist, in all of Florida. The picture above is from yesterday’s Miami Beach ride, organized to kick off Miami’s, and now Florida’s bicycle month. For more info and rides, happening all month long, visit the Critical Mass meetup page.

Someone needs to tell the *&%#@$ Miami Police Dept it’s Bike Month. I had a city cop ordering me [via his car loudspeaker] to get off the road from the comfort of his cruiser on Calle Ocho @ 6:40 this morning. Of course I ignored him and continued on my way.
Bike month or not, call and email the police department to complain!
The Police cannot rectify the behaviour of their officers without your submitting a complaint. PLEASE contact your Little Havana area Commander Jose Alfonso: Details on the website. Thank you.

Kathryn, is a license plate number of a police car sufficient? This is the second time that this has happened to me in the last year. Neither incident happened in the little Havana area proper, once in front of Versailles and this morning at 57th Avenue & 8th Street SW. The City of Miami police cars both times have been behind me and honestly, I have just wanted to get on my way because their announcement basically tells the cars around me that my bike in the street is “open season” and I don’t want to get arrested or in a confrontation with an armed police officer.
