Transit Miami has just learned that bicycle lanes will now be included in an upcoming Coral Way road project. Thus, expect to see new bicycle lanes from Southwest 12th Avenue to Southwest 15th Road in the not-too-distant-future. Thanks to all who called and emailed their support, and many thanks to our support at City Hall from Mayor Diaz and City Manager Peter Hernandez. All of the support made the difference!

Three cheers for two wheels!
I hope they eventually expand this to at least 32nd Ave., which is the border between the City of Miami and Coral Gables.
At least 32nd Avenue…hear hear!
Great news!
What am I talking about? I meant to say 37th Ave, which is the border between Miami and the Gables.
If they’re going to do this, then do it all the way.
Well then all the way to 57th just for me!
I’m putting my Volkswagen up for sale if that happens!
The border to the gables is SW 37th Ave. Look at the road signs there, on the other side of 37 they are the little white stone signs the gables use and on the east side they are green signs. Sorry to be a stickler. It is great that this is taking place.
It is only the begining.
The reason the project is only this segment is that the bicycle lanes are being tacked on to an already existing road improvement project. Additional lanes the length of Coral Way to the Gables may prove to be slightly more difficult as the ROW will be difficult to acquire Remember, pedestrians first, then bikes, then cars. We don’t want to take away sidewalk space for bicycles.
However, the idea is to push the lanes from this segment of Coral way down 3rd Avenue to the M-path. This next segment is likely, as it will provide great connectivity from the M-Path to downtown on the south and north side of I-95.
An alternative to the Coral Way-length lane is to simply take SW 22nd Terrace, which brings you from 37th to SW 17th. Not ideal, but it is at least within 5 blocks of the lanes to be constructed. This segment would be ideal for a bicycle boulevard, giving priority to bicyclists at intersections over the whole length, save for the major intersections with 27th, 22nd, etc.
It’s a start…
Yes, this is very good news. Who would have thought? A round of cheers for our city!
I’m wondering why you would think Pete Hernandez and Manny Diaz had anything to do with it… much less support it. Were developers looking for bike lanes? Were seniors hoping for it? Did Coral Way drivers march on city hall? Maybe the three handpicked commissioners convince the dark lord of Miami himself?
I think you should be thanking the engineers and managers who believed it was a necessary asset to Miami and planned it out in a way that no one could hold it back.
Semi,
Peter Hernandez personally wrote in support of this project. It nearly didn’t happen, but the City’s support, along with all citizens who wrote and called in support, made this happen. FYI — Mayor Diaz is absolutely a bicycle proponent. He has done nothing but support bicycling efforts since last February when I,and a few other concerned citizens, had a meeting with him. Both deserve our respect, regardless of your past impressions or political leanings.
