It's the intersection of Commercial Blvd and Powerline Rd., two 6 lane roads, with double left turn lanes everywhere. Plus a right turn lane from Commercial to Powerline that I had just passed. So the section I had just passed had 9 lanes altogether. But the main reason you see a lot of pavement is the huge intersection.

See also this search page at the Sun-Sentinel for three more pics of me on the bicycle. Two are in my neighborhood, and there is one more of me on Commercial. If you're bored and have nothing better to do...

Dragged kicking & screaming out of their vehicles .... reminds me of that Saudi proverb: "Our grandfathers rode camels. We ride in motor-cars. Our grandchildren will ride camels."

They're the ones who have to be dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st century and out of their personal vehicles.

great post and great article. Unfortunately, when you read the comments on the Sun Sentinel article, you get the sense that South Floridians are just dumb as rocks and will never and I mean ever, get it.
