Agreed on driver education! I have never encountered such aggressive-towards-cyclists drivers than here in Miami.

Go Ellen! I started biking to work on days I don’t need my car for work related travel. Those are the best. If you can take up cycling to work in July in Miami, you know it can be year-round. I have a 3.8 mile commute, and don’t need to shower if I leave early enough BECAUSE my route is mostly shaded along Ludlam.

I was able to get my building to install a bike rack, and a co-worker now commutes via bike and bus to Pinecrest from Homestead!

This is inspiring. I’m still trying to figure out what type of carbon-free transportation to get, but I’m leaning heavily toward a bike. The next best bet is a longboard, which I know nothing about.

Ellen sounds like an awesome person. All bike commuters should sign up for the “Emergency Ride Home” program through South Florida Commuter Services (www.1800234RIDE.com). Look under “Ride Share Options.” If you are registered they will pay for a taxi ride home in an emergency situation (family illness, etc).

To JM she said Trek, it’s a brand.
I met Ellen and her daughter at a County MPO planning meeting, we got to plot out our vision of future transit with ribbon and legos. We talked about cycling and the realities of commuting in Miami. Ellen is great, and her daughter also rides and that is great that they are taking these steps. Hopefully, Miami can become more bike friendly and make bike commuting a better option for more and more people.

Wow, great interview. Ellen really cracked me up with “I have approached the building management people but they look at me as if I have two heads and cite “security” concerns.” Oooh, I’ve been there, honey. Keep riding and thanks for the inspiration (esp. for making an effort to instil individualism in your daughter).

Additional questions for Ellen:
How long does it take you to get to work by bicycle?
How long did it take you by car?

My time went from 15 minutes by car to 30 minutes by bicycle for a 6 mile trip, not counting showering time.

Also, do you mean you ride a road bike? Track bikes are single speed, for racing around a paved track. So your statement is a little confusing…
