Transitography 20

Can anyone name the artist and title of this classic modernist sculpture in Chicago? The title certainly lends to the possibility that it would be ideal in Miami. The middle of the 20th century saw great and numerous public art erected, a repeat performance that could be pivotal in the transformation of DWNTWN Miami.

I would guess it’s a Calder - but have no idea about the title. Are you going to keep me in suspense?

It is a Calder. I felt like I knew Calder well, but never thought it was his work. For some reason I always thought it was one of Picasso’s many periods.

Let’s give it 24 hours to see if anyone knows the title. I was surprised by that also.

If it was in Miami you better hide it from a hurricane!

Just as long as it’s not a Brito piece. I’m so sick of his ‘art’ in public places.
Miami needs to stop putting his stuff everywhere. With so many talented Miami artists it is really a shame that he is so heavily associated with Miami.

I couldn’t agree with you more regarding Britto. I believe that it is actually souring the populus on large scale public art, which is a terrible miscarriage and very unfortunate.

The sculpture is Alexander Calder’s Flamingo. Very, very Calderish. In response to Brittos being everywhere…he loves to give away his work. I can’t think of a single paying commission in South Florida. He just donates the work. I think it is very sneaky and unfair to other artists that don’t have the capital to give away their art. Do you actually think any city would buy that stuff? It is such poor quality art, but the guy is a marketing genius.

Flamingo is the Miami connection. I didn’t realize Britto gave away so much work. I believe that the upcoming Brittos at Everglades on the Bay and 5th and Alton were paid for by the developers. It certainly is very very Calderish in hindsight. I would have expected it to be a mobile, just my own personal fascination with Calder.

Brito also has a bunch of lobbyists getting him work. He may give away a lot of work but it’s still awful.
