Transitography 1

Barcelona, originally uploaded by So Cal Metro.

We’re beginning a new daily segment here on TransitMiami.com which will feature daily photos of all mode of transportation from all over the world. We’ve created a Flickr group for interested members to join to share their photos with us, which hopefully will one day be featured here on the site.

I see why so many Miami based developers use Barcelona as a ideal model. A series of connected streetcars or light rails would be great in Miami. Let’s get on the ball.

Barcelona is the ideal city to model when planning a streetcar system in Miami. The modern sleek system is well integrated with its surroundings and the dynamic artsy city is always changing with the times. These are the reasons I chose Barcelona’s Streetcar as our first image in the daily series; to depict what other cities are doing and show what Miami could become…

    Glad you guys agree…

Can you imagine a sleek streetcar like that going east west on Flagler or Calle Ocho, out to the Gables. How cool would that be.

…cool enough to attract thousands and thousands of daily riders; cool enough to kick start a revolutionary change in downtown by helping to spur serious investment; cool enough to perhaps set Miami on a new paradigm of transit-oriented development and regional connectivity.

Very cool, indeed. Yet, sadly, I’d be more willing to bet the farm on the Marlins winning the World Series this year than on this transit line being built before 2020.

Barcelona is not as spread-out as Miami (or rather Miami-Dade) but it does share the lack of a definitive “core” and therefore the need to link several neighborhoods/districts. Paris is similar as well.

Every time I hear people protest that mass transit would not work in Miami I wonder if they get around much.
