“PEDESTRIAN POSSIBILITIES: Miami-Dade Transit is to hold a July 26 public meeting for discussion of a pedestrian overpass over US 1 at the University Metrorail Station. An overpass would be funded by the county’s half-penny sales tax and would feature elevators, stairs and landscaping. The open house and presentation are set for 4-7 p.m. at the Holiday Inn University of Miami, Alhambra Meeting Room, 1350 S. Dixie Highway. Details: (305) 375-5453 or mdtoutreach@miamidade.gov.”

I attended the last Bicycle Pedestrian Advocacy Committee meeting last month. It was quite interesting and the University of Miami Pedestrian Overpass that is to be built at Mariposa and US-1. It was great to see the plan in its early stages and get to put our input in. Some big considerations that will need to be re-looked at are, elevator size to allow for bikes to fit, rain cover (they were concerned how much cover it would get from rain, and if it would be too slippery),one item a few people in the audience wanted an incline on the stairs so you could walk your bike up the steps. The current design is very modern but lacks green initiatives. It would really be nice for it to include solar lighting and plants on the outside or roof top. They also went over the plans for the South Miami Pedestrian Overpass that would be at the corner of Sunset and US-1. This one is Mediterranean in style and includes more plants, the same concerns about the stairs and elevators were related on this project as well. They are still in the early stages of both designs and have a ways to go. I would encourage anyone that walks or rides a bike or is wheelchair bound to attend the B.P.A.C. meeting July 25th at 5:30PM. There are many other major projects that will affect pedestrians and they will be reviewed. This is a great opportunity to have your say and get it on record. Show your support for transit and bike lanes.
