Straight to the Trash

Riding around on metrorail recently, I couldn’t help but wonder which public coffer was plundered to pay for the replacement see-through trash cans along every station. Look, I’m not against keeping the city secure from reasonable threats, but, I don’t think any terrorist is looking to bomb one of the most underutilized transit systems in the nation- it’s just not happening. As Rebecca noted earlier, the old trash receptacles were even removed for quite some time before the new ones had arrived. It’s quite humorous actually, while standing around waiting for the northbound train, I realized where our half-penny tax was headed; straight to the trash…

Is this Miami-Dade’s effort to make transit stations better public spaces???

I don’t get what the issue is here. The new trash cans are actually much more attractive. They are trash cans, they have to be replaced at some point. Might as well make them look cool.

I was glad to see trash cans return. I’ve been stuck more than once with no place to deposit my litter.

The new glass bus shelters in Kendall are a much bigger waste of money in my opinion.

The issue is that there was nothing wrong with the old bins and that it was a waste of money. Why not spend this money to upgrade the metropass system so that we can actually use credit cards to buy our way onto metrorail instead. Plus, the old trash cans were removed hastily before the new bins had even arrived, as if there was some credible threat we needed to be concerned about…

Brickell- I agree, but, I can only tackle one thing at a time…I’ll get to it.

The old concrete trash bins made a reappearance briefly after the paranoia from 9/11 lessened, but dissappeared again after the Madrid train bombings. As is typical of the incompetence of MDT they are not using CLEAR trash bags, but translucent ones which hardly provide any additional visibility.

What do bombs look like anyway? Couldn’t someone hide something in a coke can or something and still throw it in there? I mean just could easily dump a grenade or something … oh well.

    My Point exactly….

It’s not _bombs_ that they’re worried about, it’s evil doers and al-Qaeda operatives covertly hiding within our unsuspected receptacles.
